Periodontics

Periodontics is the field of dentistry that treats the tissues that support the teeth (periodontal): gums, cementum, alveolar bone and alveolar-dental ligaments. Periodontal diseases are caused by a bacterial or parasitic infection.

The most common ailments that gums suffer from are gingivitis and periodontitis.

GINGIVITIS
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup and tartar.
Often painless, it is detected by bleeding during brushing or flossing. In addition, the gums are redder than usual, even swollen. Although gingivitis is not serious in itself, in the absence of proper care, it can degenerate into periodontitis, a much more serious illness.

NB – Pregnancy gingivitis is usually transient because it is caused by hormonal changes. After childbirth, everything becomes normal again.

PERIODONTITIS
Periodontitis is caused by the presence of specific bacteria that develop under the gum. Several factors can influence the severity and progression of periodontitis such as smoking, diabetes, immune deficiencies, stress and heredity.

Untreated periodontitis can lead to tooth mobility or loss. It can also affect your overall health.
To prevent, detect and treat gum disease, you must not only maintain good oral hygiene, but also regularly consult a dentist who will tell you if your gums are healthy.
